Taicang High-tech Zone, established in 1993, encompasses an actual jurisdiction area of 116.74 square kilometers. It received approval in 2012 to prepare for the establishment of a provincial-level high-tech zone, which was officially inaugurated on September 21, 2018. The Hu-Su-Tong Railway (Shanghai-Suzhou-Nantong Railway) Phase I and II, the Yangtze River South Bank Railway (Nanjing South-Taicang High-Speed Railway), the Yangtze River North Bank Railway (part of the Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu High-Speed Railway), and the Shanghai Suburban Railway Jiamin Line intersect in Taicang. This place is home to Taicang Railway Station and Taicang South Railway Station, providing a rapid 17-minute commute to Hongqiao Hub. Taicang serves as a pivotal bridgehead for Suzhou and Jiangsu to integrate with Shanghai.
Taicang High-tech Zone has been instrumental in driving economic development. In recent years, it has contributed to approximately half of Taicang's major economic indicators, including general public budget revenue, industrial output of large-scale enterprises, and fixed asset investment.
Taicang High-tech Zone has evolved into a hub for three major industries. The industry of core parts and components of new energy vehicles focuses on power systems, electronic and electrical systems, and chassis systems. The aviation industry concentrates on the manufacturing of aviation parts, new materials, unmanned aerial vehicles, and aviation services. The industrial mother-machine industry emphasizes high-end CNC machine tools, cutting tools, and software.
Taicang High-tech Zone serves as a significant platform for Sino-German cooperation. It hosts over 500 German enterprises with a total investment exceeding 6 billion U.S. dollars. The number of German enterprises in the manufacturing sector represents more than 10% of the national total. The investment promotion network in Germany spans the entire country, and a comprehensive service ecosystem for German enterprises has been established. The Taicang Day celebrations in Germany, the Taicang Rothenburg Oktoberfest, and the Rothenburg Waterfront have become internationally famous.
Taicang High-tech Zone is a hotbed of scientific and innovative activity. It is home to branches of prestigious universities and research institutes, including Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, and Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, as well as three institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences: the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, the Institute of Computing Technology, and the Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics. Additionally, the zone houses The Yangtze River Delta Research Institute of Northwestern Polytechnical University, the Yangtze River Delta Reliability System Engineering Innovation Institute, and the Suzhou Zhongke Laser Intelligent Manufacturing Innovation Research Institute.
